Final Day... or half-day I should say. Opening up with a wonderful breakfast at our "top inn of the trip".. we stayed at the Frog Hollow B&B in Lexington with our hosts with the most.. John and David. Read my review of the inn on Trip Advisor. Also read our review of the restaurant we visited the night before "Southern Inn Restaurant". But back to the Inn. Breakfast is pictured (below) and we thoroughly enjoyed the company and conversation with the Innkeepers. From there we went to walk the campus of Washington and Lee College and visit the Lee Chapel and museum. We wrapped up with a visit of Traveler's last resting place. From there we drove to Durham/Cary to meet up with Mic-and-Maddy and have a relaxing walk at the local park and grill out with Cindy and Michael.

Civil War-gasm Day 5

Today we started out with pecan waffles w/ natural maple syrup and bacon, delivered and served by candle light in our historic inn. David it turns out is a descendant of a Rev. Brown who served as a chaplain in the Stonewall brigade. He was captured at one time during the conflict but was treated well, as he happened to be married to the niece of Gen. Grant. So the great-great-grandfather of our innkeeper even had a connection to both the CSA Gen. Stonewall Jackson AND the Union General and later President U.S. Grant.

Former H H McGuire home

After walking the mall again in Winchester we happened upon the director/historian of the Old Court House Civil War museum and chatted about battlefield medicine, Stonewall and other topics (as she was ex-military and interested in my research). She was able to direct us to HH McGuires boyhood home just around the corner, which we visited and is now a law office. Stepped inside to appreciate the grandness of the place. From there we proceeded to the local Mt. Hebron Cemetery where the bodies of Captain Hugh McGuire (Hunter's brother) was buried. He was killed just days before the surrender at Appomattox. Along side were the graves of the Patton Brothers also killed during the Civil War. More on them later. In the old section of the cemetery we also happened upon Hugh (Senior) McGuire who was Hunter's father. We had to depart Winchester to make it to Lexington, VA. On our way out of town we spotted singer Patsy Cline's childhood home.

We had the director of the Stonewall Jackson House Museum promise us a special private tour, as the house museum is usually closed in Jan and Feb. We got a wonderful private tour with some intimate information about Gen. Jackson and Fm. prior to the war. From there we were off the the VMI campus and museum, meeting up with the gift store manager and his sophomore student assistant (Proctor) who helped us with what the museum had to offer... of course we saw Little Sorrel, read about Jackson, his uniforms and rubber raincoat re-pleat with bullet holes in the Left Shoulder and information on another famous general who studied there for a while Gen. George S. Patton III. It so happened that buried next to Col. Hugh McGuire are the tombs of both Pattons who lost their lives in the Battle of Winchester and Gettysburg (George & Waller respectfully, grandfather and grand-uncle of the WWII war hero).

After our tour, we proceeded to our Inn... the The Frog Hollow B&B just out of town limits and met David & John the innkeepers and chatted it up with them for almost an hour. Dinner at their recommendations was at the Southern Inn Restaurant. Back to the Inn for a good and well deserved rest.

Civil War-gasm Day 4

Day 4 of our War-gasm had us up for breakfast at Meredith s and as she was off to work, we tided up and got on the road towards Frederick, MD once again with wife in tow to view the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and take in the down town. The museum was nicely done, clean and fresh exhibits took you on a journey starting with how civil war era physicians and surgeons were "schooled"... onto field dressing stations and all the way through recovery or convalescence in a General Hospital. Finally they discussed artificial limbs and ultimately what happens if a soldier didn't make it... embalming and sending the bodies home. Had a chance to chat with George the museum director who informed us that just yesterday they received a new (old) piece to add to their displays... apparently an amputated (and mummified) arm found at Antietam (only the 2nd known to exist). Leaving Frederick's quaint historic district after a rather nice lunch at Cafe NOLA, we drove on to Winchester, VA (after crossing over into WV thru the mountains). Drab and dreary with overcast skies and a light drizzle all the way, we could imagine just how some of the soldiers from both sides had to contend with inclement weather while they were on long marches.

Arriving in Winchester we drove directly to the Inn.... The Nancy Shepherd House Inn, located in the historic district of Winchester and just 4 blocks for the very pedestrian downtown mall. David the innkeeper/owner was very welcoming and gave us a tour complete with the history of the inn and some of the relics and "hot muzzle burns" left on the heart-pine floor during the heated battles that occurred in this town during the Civil War. Artifacts were found on the grounds and buried in the walls during the restoration and many were on display at the inn. We had dinner at a local Northern Italian Restaurant where the owners spoke in very heavily accented Italian. Dinner was nice but un-rushed.

Day 3 of the Civil War-gasm took me to Frederick, MD to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Terri, the archivist at the museum set out several books and photocopied clippings, articles and the such for me. It was much appreciated as it added to the body of material I have been compiling for the past few months. Sharon and Meredith decided to skip the research trip and go "shopping". Meanwhile I drove the 45 miles to Frederick from College Park to spend several hours buried among the books, tomes and documents at the library... so immersed was I, time got away from me and there was none left to tour the museum. So tomorrow I will return with Sharon in tow to peruse the exhibits. Below are images I took with my smart-phone camera from a couple of tomes on McGuire and Jackson...

"Stonewall" Jackson (this is the full length rarely seen photograph of Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, taken after fighting the Federal forces and expelling them out of Winchester, VA)... known as the Winchester photos, it depicts Jackson in a rumpled uniform with a hastily sewn on button (3rd from bottom on R) The other famous photo of the General is referred to as his Chancellorsville photo (more of a profile shot) which would be his last before his wounding and death during hostilities there.

The "Stonewall Sword" presented to Dr. McGuire for services as Medical Corp director. Story is that Confederates would round up "gold" side arms from Union forces after a battle and melt the gold down to "buy enough liquor to keep a regiment drunk for a week"... Jackson a staunch opponent to drinking did not approve and required all confiscated side arms brought before him to be reviewed under penalty of death. Once it was determined by Sandie Pendelton and Jackson that the sword held no "gold" it was offered up to McGuire (as Hunter had a predilection for drinking, cussing and girl watching, that Jackson did not approve). [This according to a conversation with Dr. H H (Mac) McGuire, Jr] The sword now resides with Dr. Mac's oldest son.

Heartbreaking News about the Society of Civil War Surgeons

After some heartbreaking news on our trip, I responded to all the members of the SOCWS this morning.

I registered at the first announcement. I joined the society only last year and attended my first conference in Williamsburg in 2011. It was a most enlightening experience for my wife and I. I would encourage all of you to make ever effort to attend and support this society. Currently I am trekking through Virginia and Maryland this week polishing up my presentation on Dr. Hunter H. McGuire. Just yesterday I had the privilege to interview Dr. Hunter H. McGuire, Jr (his great grandson) and visited the Richmond Capitol grounds where the ''old man's" statue resides as well as the Chimborazo Hospital site, Hollywood Cemetery and Chancellorsville Battlefield. Today I will visit the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD. Finally wrapping up our journey end of week in Winchester and Lexington, VA.

Everywhere I have been, once the park rangers, docents & guides realize the reason for my short sojourn, their eyes light up and they come forth with tidbits of information on the topic of medicine during the Civil War and hard to find information on Stonewall Jackson's surgeon.

While not a reenactor, I am a student of history and a collector of early American medical antiques. I have very strong feelings about keeping history alive and interesting for our children and our society as a whole. It would be devastating to lose such an important society during the sesquicentennial remembrances of the War between the States.

As a brand new member of this society, I am hoping and praying that the conference IS NOT cancelled. I live in Atlanta and have been to Port Columbus ,Andersonville, and Ft Bennings new infantry museum. These places are absolutely wonderful! The towns of Columbus and Oglethorpe area are darling and well worth the trip. I am so excited about meeting the other members and networking. Since I joined, I have gotten so much out of this organization by asking questions to several members for resources as I write my book.

I was a president of a national nurses organization and when every other group was going belly up, we grew and had our own conference and netted $120,000! It was all due to determination of the Board and other members to make this group the representative of our nursing specialty. This organization( SOCWS) is just thata specialty where no other group can provide the kind of discussions, networking and expertise that is offered. Hopefully, the membership will continue to see the value of this organization and gathering for an annual conference.

I am very proud to be a member and hope SOCWS will continue to thrive.

Dear Society members:
     The Society, YOUR Society, is in dire straits. We are less than two (2) months away from our next conference and it is not looking good. As many of you know, I always worry about enough registrations. Somehow you always come through in the end. I thought last year was bad, but this year is even worse. As of todays date, January 23rd, we have only 16 people registered for the conference.
     I realize that the economy is tough, but it is even tougher for the Society. What can we do at this time? Can we go ahead with the conference? Probably, but the hotel, caterers, etc. are counting on a minimum number (60) of people attending. We would, in all probability have to compensate these groups for the difference between the actual number attending and the projected number. Can we cancel the conference? Yes, but it would have to be done NLT February 21st. Even at that, we would have to pay the hotel at least $1200 in liquidated damages, not to mention the $4,000 we would have to refund those who have already registered. Additionally, we don't know if the caterers, bus company, and naval museum will refund the deposits already paid.
     What would this mean for the Society if we cancel the conference?  The End! It would bankrupt us. No more web site; no more journal; no more Society. In addition, we would have to try to refund the membership fees for the members who renewed for this year, as well as those who did a multi-year renewal.
     The Society has been in existence for 32 years. It is THE go to organization for persons interested in studying, researching, portraying Civil War era medicine, surgery, and the professionals who practiced those arts. It would be a disservice to all if the Society were to fold.
     That being said, what can you do for your Society. First, if you plan to attend the conference send in your registration and payment ASAP. Second, if you are not going to attend, or even if you are, you can make a tax deductible donation by check, money order, credit card, or Pay Pal. We will send you a letter acknowledging your donation for tax purposes. No amount is too small.
     To paraphrase someone, the fate of the Society is in your hands, my fellow countrymen, not mine. Whether the Society continues past the next few months will be entirely up to you, the members. Dont let this organization, your organizationdisappear and leave a void, not only in your lives, but in those who count on the Society for the expertise, knowledge, and support it can provide.

Last meeting between Gens Robert Edward Lee & Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson

After a hearty breakfast at the Museum District Bed and Breakfast we were off to an interview with Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, Jr (retired), great-grandson of the famous Dr. McGuire (Gen. Stonewall Jackson's surgeon). We appreciated his bronze statue in the Capitol Grounds of Richmond the day before and now we got a chance to speak with a direct descendant. The pleasant and gracious doctor provided clarification on the genealogy, aspects of contentious issues related to his great-grandfather and interesting "not to be found elsewhere" information on the legacy of this medical family.

From there we visited the Chapel dedicated to the Confederate disabled and wounded veterans, a visit to several grave sites at the Hollywood Cemetery (namely HH McGuire's site) and then the Chimborazo Hospital site and National Park. Dr. McGuire (Mac) who is on the board of the Hollywood Cemetery provided us with a guide he wrote to get us to places of interest. Leaving Richmond finally a bit behind schedule we got in late to the Battlefield at Chancellorsville. One of the park volunteers (Brit) was helpful as was the 22-min. video on the battles at that site. In 1996 the "true" site of Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's wounding by his own troops (NC 18th infantry regiment) was located and marked. The highway historical marker and the stone monument at the previously considered sites are actually inaccurate. We were unfortunate to have missed the site of Jackson's arm burial at Ellwood, for it was late in the day and that part of the park was closed.

Driving to Maryland to meet up with Meredith at her home, a home cooked meal and good night sleep after a busy day. Pictures below.

Here I am at the "exact" spot in which Gen. Stonewall Jackson was felled by bullets from his own troops. After much debate and research, it was determined in 1996 that this was the actual spot in which the general was wounded by three bullets fired from a picket line by the 18th regiment of NC. An unfortunate friendly fire incident among the carnage of those couple of days that eventually changed the outcome of the war.

Left Pawleys at 7AM sharp and arrived in Richmond, VA near 2PM. Made good time, uneventful trip. Entered the new annex, visitors center of the recently renovated and expanded State Capitol building. Met up with Mark (one of the guides) who handed out material about HH McGuire as he realized my interest in the doctor and my research there. Visited the rotunda, the Jefferson room, and viewed much of the interior of the state Capitol building designed by Jefferson. Outside visited the statues of T. Stonewall Jackson and of course the seated statue of Dr. H. H. McGuire.

For the last week of 2011 we were the hosts for Sharon's kids, my kids and parents.

For starters Pat and Meredith came down from DC with Nathan in tow from NYC on his last hurrah before flying out to Chile. Ryan got a few days off to join us all at the beach. Mic and Maddy were picked up on the 26th and spent the week at the beach as well. Towards the end of the week Michael & Phyllis came down from Lburg.

We did dinner at Roz's Cafe in the Hammocks Shopping center, also tried out the INDO Indonesian, sushi and Japanese restaurant in PI. Additionally, we finally did some oysters on the half-shell at Hot & Hot Fish Club restaurant on New Year's eve.

So, our new most favorite TV show is a situation comedy now on TBS since 2007. It is all the rage, especially for Sharon. She has gone so far as to purchase all of season one on DVD. So whenever we need a BBT fix we can watch it on our DVD player. The cast is am amazing collection of comedic actors that do their characters justice. It is quirky, cerebral and sophisticated comedy (you need a PhD to get most of the jokes). And at the end of every episode there are the internal mind gear works of on the the producers in a text soliloquy worth reading for its' weirdness.

Brookgreen Gardens’ Nights of a Thousand Candles

Evening spent roaming the gardens to appreciate all the lights (thousands of candle lights) in the gardens, around the sculptures and also the live entertainment, from a Scott playing the bagpipes to a fellow on a "Theater Organ" (Martin) and a women on a harp (Becky). There were Folk Music (Jill) singer and a high energy performance from a Celtic Duo (Trip & Tom on guitar and banjo /violin) Dinner was had under a big tent as we dined on shrimp and grits. We rounded out the evening by listening to the N. Myrtle Beach Community Band.

Mighty 8th Aircorps B-24 Liberators

On this the 70th anniversary of the "day that will live in infamy", I remember a few things. First and foremost, the devastating surprise attack by Imperialistic Japan upon our nation, secondly, the determination our "greatest generation" made in fighting back for freedom against the Japanese Empire and Nazi Germany.

It is also the day after I spent a week with my uncle Gerry in Naples, Florida. A war hero who at age 87 today (who today can keep up with the best of them) was a mere 17-year old taking up the call to fight for his country. My uncle Gerry was in the Mighty 8th Army Air-corps. He flew with a crew of other brave men as a tail gunner in a B-24 Liberator. Our last night with him before we departed, after eating a wonderful home cooked meal of his special salmon dish, we fingered though pictures of him in his flight suite at age 18, pictures of him with his flight crew and seated between 50-calibers perched in the tail gunnery position of his plane. He managed to make it through his 27-missions (since he was in the lead plane on bombing missions, the only ones equipped with a Norden bombsight they were allowed fewer missions (25 versus the usual 30) before being mustered out to go state-side. However, as the war closed the push was on to bomb the Nazi's out of France so he had to fly 2 more missions than normal.

Gerry told us stories about his finding a German helmet while delivering fuel to Paton's tanks as they rolled toward Berlin and keeping it for a souvenir, his son finding a "red" tablet years later in the head band while playing soldier when he was only a couple of years old. He told tale of a buddy who was the side gunner getting hit with shrapnel so hard it spun his flying cap around where the ear muffs covered his eyes, and the old boy figured he was blind (but only managed a scratch on his neck).

Uncle Gerry came back whole from one of the most terrible wars in human history, to make it in college and the business world. And have the luxury of retiring after a great career with fond memories of his life, family and friends. Cheers Uncle Gerry. My greatest respects to those still alive from WWII and those who gave their lives.

Our second evening after our trip to the Ford/Edison Museum we dined at BoneFish Grill and had a pleasant time. This time we cooked in with Ger making some awesome Fresh salmon and we thru in some baked potatoes and fresh green beans sauteed with caramelized onions. For dessert was a slice of Ellen's home made Pecan pie. We were all hungry as we had been out most of the afternoon GeoCaching. Introduced Ger and Ellen to the sport. It took us thru Naples and to the Veterans Park for our first cache then to the Barefoot Beach park where we saw dozens of "gopher turtles" and hit the beach for a while. We finally ended up with a cache at the Royal Scoop... we parked w/in 4 feet of the cache and treated ourselves to a scoop of icecream. The evening was spent after dinner talking about family, reviewing dozens of pictures and Ger's old WWII war time stores and pics. We did start our day with a walk around the property with a "walk" on the boat docs and a dip in the pool (temp 80-degrees) Today we fly out after a visit to the museum.

Ft. Myers - Naples, FL Trip

Day one was a flight in from MB to Ft. Myers with a 30-min drive to Uncle Gerry/Ellen's place in Naples.

I had a CME in Infectious Dz from Fri-Sunday each morning from 8-12:00. Each day I would break and go out with Uncle Gerry and Ellen. The first day we did dinner at Gers. The next afternoon we "took Uncle Gerry's famous tour of Naples" which entailed driving about downtown Naples to people watch, a trip to the beach and boardwalk and pier. We also checked out some local cribs. Yes, we unabasidly went to a few open houses to look at $6M+ houses (but hey the houses were free, you just had to pay for the lot).

Crazy expensive McMansion, on the water in Naples, FL.. this monstrosity 7200 sqft. With a dock that you can berth the QEII and a master suite for each bedroom, built in 1991 with lots of updates. Asking price in neighborhood of $6.5 M. (million that is), yeah in today's economy. The 2nd one was much more demure but was listed for $7,300,000.

Rounding things up we diverted to the "place of the monkeys"... but alas, as on previous trips there was only thick vegetation and no evidence of any squirrel monkeys, but maybe we did indeed hear them. Maybe??? After attempting to gain access and a table at the "Blue Martini" http://www.bluemartinilounge.com/event/12/naples.html we ducked the noise and crowd for a "JP" special 15-minute spaghetti dinner.

OK, so my wife and I are the ultimate Foodies. We certainly enjoy and expect the very best when expected to pay over $25/entree. That being said, we decided to splurge on a Monday night after being away from Pawleys for almost a week. In our quest to rank all the local restaurants, we have been treating ourselves to different ones every week or so. We entered Bistro 217 without a reservations and non was needed on a Monday evening. We were seated immediately in their covered outside seating. Our waiter was Sean, a very personable and very well trained waiter. He presented in an enticing and complete manner the specials of the day all from memory. Off to a good start I thought.

We ordered the Spinach salad with goat cheese (the largest dollop of goat cheese we have ever seen on a salad) and I had the very yummy Crab Bisque with Cherry.

Our entree was the special a Trigger Fish dish encrusted in Pine Nuts and served over a shrimp and sausage risotto. Absolutely Fantastic. Even the bread basket was imaginative and worth seconds.

Portions are plentiful and worthy of a take home clamshell and you certainly get your moneys worth. Certainly one of PI's BEST gustatory establishments.

In our tradition as non-conformists... we planned our thanksgiving dinner during the Saturday that we could all gather in Cary, NC with Cindy, Michael and Victoria and Christina (who flew in from Atlanta). Mom & Dad also joined us from Laurinburg as did Michael's cousin Arnold who was staying with Cindy & Michael while doing some work in the area.

First SC USAR medical team training day 11/10/11. Place: Columbia, SC Fire Academy; Time: All Day; What: Morning didactic lectures, afternoon rubble pile and get down and dirty. So how small a hole can Dr. Saleeby crawl thru? I think the S&R team members were testing the doctor. Could barely squeeze my helmet thru the hole cut out of concrete in a rescue scenario and managed to squeeze thru with minimal bruises and scrapes (save the 3 tears to the team blouse). Overall the three docs in attendance got their hands dirty (Drs. Weinstein, Armstrong & Saleeby)

Georgetown UDC SCV unveiling of USS Harvest Moon Marker

Ceremony and Plaque in downtown Georgetown, SC the 3rd oldest city in South Carolina

Kids were down for the weekend. Their first weekend at the beach house in Pawleys Island. This morning we were up bright and early to take in the unveiling and dedication service of a new historic marker commemorating the sinking of the USS Harvest Moon, one of the Union Navy's blockade ships and flagship of Rear Adm. J. A. Dahlgren. Adm. Dahlgren was best known for his contributions to naval ordnance and the "Dahlgren Guns" or cannons used in naval warfare. He was also remembered as the "father of naval ordnance".

The USS Harvest Moon was constructed in 1862 completed as a merchant ship, but sold to the Union Navy & commissioned Feb. 12, 1864. She had a very short service as she was hit with a Confederate mine/torpedo on March 1, 1865 and sank in 5-minutes taking one Union sailor as a casualty. At low tide today once can see the smokestack of the Harvest Moon in Winyah Bay. Attempts by archaeological divers in 1963 were made in an attempt to bring up the ship, but funding dwindled.

The keg torpedo that sunk the Harvest Moon was fashioned by Capt. T. W. Daggett (CSA). Noteworthy was the fact that Rear Adm. Dahlgren's son Eurlic (a Colonel in the Union Army) was the leader of a failed attempt in 1864 to raid Richmond, VA, free Union prisoners, burn Richmond and assassinate Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet. The letters/orders found by a Southern school boy on the dead Eurlic Dahlgren were know as the Dahlgren affair/or Dahlgren Letters and became a major source of embarrassment to the Union (as it was linked back to the White House and Abe Lincoln).

The ceremony today was witnessed by some 50 to 60 folks from both the UDC and SCVs and friends/tourists/visitors, and attended by the mayor of Georgetown. It commemorated the loss of life, the ship and Capt. Daggett for the South.

This was the first dedication service and unveiling of a historical marker I had ever attended. Kids were fascinated with the history. The service ended with members of the SCV firing off muskets, mortars and a cannon.

October 1st... new chapter in our life

Well we sold our home of almost 5-years in Bennettsville. In the midst of getting the place ready to lease as a furnished home to an engineer and his family for 18-months, our realtor told us to give her one more go at selling our place, with a very interested party (yeah, we hear that all before). But in the end with only 48-hrs to go before signing a lease agreement a CASH offer came in for more than what we paid for the place in 2006. Well, in today's economy that was a "WOW MOMENT". So we accepted... Cash offer without any contingencies and to close in 2 weeks... double wow. Now we had to make plans to move all of our stuff and to where? We just had no idea. Work at MPH would keep me in Bville until the end of the year. Sharon wanted to get back to the ocean, and we were looking at Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island for some time. We also were looking into a place closer to my kids in Durham in the Pinehurst and Southern Pines, NC area too. But where oh where were we to relocate... we had become in essence part of the American homeless scene.. at least for a short period.

With the help of our agents (Lisa in Pawleys & Amy in Pinehurst) we came up with a plan.... rent a beach house in Pawleys and subsequently a townhouse in Laruinburg next to my parents for at least a year. So we packed up 410 Lakeshore and split our possessions by 1/2 (one part going to the beach, and the other going to NC).

The new owner of our Lakehouse was a local retired attorney who's wife had just passed away, she apparently always wanted that house and he felt it would be a good investment for his family/kids.

We moved into our Beachhouse (in the North Litchfield section of Pawleys Island) in a rushed week of packing and unpacking.... PODS and 2-men and a truck were very helpful as we discovered how much Sh*t we really had and needed to get rid of.

Our new "crib" for the next few years. The beach house is only a block from the ocean, quick access to the beach is a 2-minute walk down a pleasant quiet neighborhood.

Sharon's beloved "screened in porch"... we had our first home cooked dinner on the porch with a beautiful ocean breeze cooling us off.

We are only 1.5 miles south of Huntington State Park and Brookgreen Gardens. We can actually walk to the undeveloped section of shoreline that HSP offers, serene and undisturbed by developers. Imagine a "beach scape on a remote island" postcard... well that is what we got. Ya'll come visit! Our Depression-meter has subsequently been returned as there will not be any need for such a device.

We watched the memorial service, reading of names and speeches by Pres. Obama and Bush. We remembered those 102 minutes that changed our lives forever. We remembered a decade long war against those who have tried to hurt our nation, destroy our liberties and break our spirit. We remember those brave men and women who served their country in law enforcement and fire & rescue and the many in our military who have given their limbs and lives in the strife to rid our planet of the treacherous world terrorists.
